More than five decades has passed since United College was founded by far-sighted leaders to nurture young talent for the Hong Kong community. I have had the privilege of being associated with the College in various roles, including student, teacher and Dean of Students during different stages of my life. Since 2002, I have had the honour of being entrusted with the duty of the College Head, endeavoring to build on the solid foundation laid by my predecessors.
Unswerving in its mission, United College has successfully served our rapidly developing society in an ever-changing world. The College leadership has been instrumental in founding a number of pioneering departments in response to the needs of Hong Kong society. Shining examples include the Department of Social Work in 1964, the Department of Government and Public Administration and the Department of Electronic Engineering in 1970, and the Department of Biochemistry in 1971. Today, these departments continue to spearhead research and innovation in high impact areas like information sciences and biomedical sciences, which have been selected for strategic investment by The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
With the conviction of placing the benefits and welfare of students as its highest priority, United College sets out to provide a congenial learning environment, whole-person education and pastoral care to its students. Modern trends of higher education tend to emphasise the transmission of academic knowledge and professional training. Flourishing under the college system, a unique feature of the Chinese University, United College offers the much needed balance of a quality non-formal education and rich college life to support students' personal growth and development.
