Our 2008 student callers share their experiences
"I was a team member of the Phone Campaign 2008. It was not an ordinary summer job and I've learnt a great deal from it. Our alumni were very kind. I really enjoyed chatting with them because not only were they generous, but also gave me useful advice about my future prospects. I was so inspired by them. As I had to encounter alumni from different backgrounds, this experience definitely helped to enhance my interpersonal communication skills and prepare me for my future career. This year I'm going to graduate and I'm proud to say that I've contributed to CU and paved the way for the benefit of our fellow schoolmates."
Phyllis Yeung, Year 3 Psychology Student
"When I first came across the recruitment advertisement of this meaningful campaign, I was immediately attracted by it. It was definitely a wonderful opportunity to be able to share news about our campus life and recent University developments with our more experienced alumni. Talking with them was enjoyable and beneficial to me. We chatted just like friends even though we had never seen each other before. It is really touching that they were willing to give me advice without hesitation even when they were busy with their work. Through this rewarding event, I have gained more insights into my studies and future career and this will undoubtedly enable me to be better prepared for my future."
Fiona Chan, Year 2 Psychology Student
"It has been the most valuable experience ever to spend time chatting with our alumni last summer during the phone campaign. The phone campaign helped us to stay in touch with the alumni on the one hand and strengthened my sense of belonging to CU on the other. There was a sense of trust between us. They shared not only their life and career experiences but also personal and family concerns. What impressed me the most was the team spirit we, the group of student ambassadors, developed. This event benefited our University, our alumni as well as myself!"
Sara Man, Year 3 Chemistry Student
"I registered to be a student caller with a very simple purpose ¡V to make good use of my summer holiday and gain more life experience. After joining the phone campaign, I can say my goal has been achieved. Being a student caller was a valuable experience in itself. Being able to hear the stories from our alumni was a bonus. They shared their experiences in study, career, travel and even, love. The phone campaign is similar to the mentorship programme we have in school. Instead of one mentor I have numerous mentors! There were hard times, when some alumni felt uneasy talking on the phone. But it was an opportunity for me to sharpen my communication skills as I coaxed them into talking more. My summer holiday has been a meaningful one for I have learnt much from the phone campaign. I have also raised funds for my beloved school. How about you?"
Amelia Loi, Year 2 Journalism and Communication Student
"Have you ever imagined chatting with strangers on the phone? In my summer break in 2008, I had lovely conversations with countless "strangers" who were all CUHK alumni.
Knowing the old stories of CUHK through chatting with alumni was a wonderful experience. Though we were not within the same generation, we all grew up in CUHK. We shared similar experiences and feelings towards our home, CUHK! The hard work in their studies, their ambitions and even their love stories, all contributed to the uniqueness of our University. And now, of course, their generous donations still support the further development of our school.
I recommend everyone to join the campaign as a student caller, to make new friends, and to learn the lively history of our own school!"
