Undergraduate Programmes for International Applicants What major programmes are open to international students? International students can choose major programmes offered by the Faculty of Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Medicine (Pharmacy programme only), Science, Social Sciences and School of Law; plus the BA in Chinese Studies programme offered by the Centre for East Asian Studies. | | | How many units are required to earn a CUHK bachelor's degree? What is the duration of CUHK's undergraduate programme? Depending on entering academic qualifications, students must complete at least 99 units or 123 units of courses before graduation within 3 to 4 years. | | | Are courses taught in English or Chinese in CUHK? Since its establishment, CUHK has adopted bilingualism and biculturalism as the basis of teaching for the benefit of local and international students and scholars. Courses are taught in Chinese or English and in some cases in both languages.
This learning environment is ideal for those who are interested in studying in a Chinese context but are unfamiliar with the language. Enough courses taught in English are offered to international students. | | | Are there courses for international students to learn English, Mandarin or Cantonese? CUHK recognizes the importance of good language skills for its students to excel locally and globally. Therefore, it allocates abundant resources in providing language training in Chinese and English for all students.
You are welcome to take Chinese or English language courses according to your own academic plans and needs. Admission Requirements What are the minimum entrance requirements for international students? Applicants shall be eligible to apply if they: | (a) | possess a qualification obtained outside Hong Kong which qualifies them for university admission in the country/region where such qualification is obtained (e.g. SAT in USA, UEC / STPM in Malaysia, HSC / TER in Australia, OSSD in Canada); OR | | (b) | have acquired an International Baccalaureate Diploma; OR | | (c) | have obtained in one sitting of the GCE Advanced Level Examination pass grades in no less than three (Advanced Level) subjects (Applicants with pass grades in 2 Advanced Level and 2 Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects may also apply); OR | | (d) | have successfully completed at least one year of (full-time) undergraduate study at a recognized university; OR | | (e) | have successfully completed a course of study leading to the qualification of associate degree / higher diploma; OR | | (f) | have other exceptional achievements which merit admission. |
| | | What is the language requirement for admission? Am I required to present any language tests such as TOEFL etc.? Applicants should have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in English. Applicants are recommended to take TOEFL or other acceptable language test, if English is not their native language.
| | | What are the selection criteria? Applicants will be considered on the basis of their past academic performance and other relevant qualifications and on individual merits. If they are invited to attend an interview (preferred by some programmes, not all), their performance at the interview will also be taken into account. |
Application Procedures What is CUHK's application deadline? The application deadline for 2008 entry was 29 February 2008. However, late applications may be considered subject to availability of places. | | | What should I do if I could only receive my academic results after the application deadline? You should apply first, and provide the academic results to us as soon as they are received. | | | When will I be notified if I was admitted? You will be notified between April and August 2008. |
Fees What is the tuition fee? Tuition fee is HK$80,000 for the academic year 2007-08. | | | What is the hostel fee? Hostel fee is around HK$8,000 per academic year. | | | What are the other expenses such as living expenses etc.? Living and other expenses would be around HK$30,000 per academic year. |
Accommodation Are campus accommodations available for international students? International students are eligible to apply for campus accommodation. The postgraduate and undergraduate student hostels scattered around the campus together offer some 6,000 hostel places. Telephone lines and campus network connection have been installed in virtually every room in such hostels. Overseas students are normally given priority for hostel places. |
