Ever since its establishment, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has been devoting much attention to postgraduate studies. The University first introduced programmes at the postgraduate level with the establishment of the School of Education in 1965. In the following year, the Graduate School was formally founded to undertake research training of postgraduate studies in five Master’s degree programmes in Chinese Language and Literature, Business Administration, Geography, History and Philosophy. Since then, the Graduate School has been developing both horizontally and vertically by advancing into the realm of doctoral education. The first doctoral programme was launched in 1980. By 2009, 34,908 graduates had been conferred with higher degrees. In the academic year 2009-10, the School offers through 61 graduate divisions a total of more than 250 (7 overseas) programmes leading to higher degrees, postgraduate diploma and certificates.
