Batch application for extension of student visa – First Round (July 2009)

Subsequent to extensive discussion with the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government (IMM), we are pleased to announce that a new initiative to accept batch application for extension of student visa will be introduced with immediate effect. The aim is to save students one trip to IMM. Separate e-mail has already been sent to the students concerned.

1. Who are eligible to use the service in the first Round?

If your student visa will expire on or after 20 July 2009 and during the months of August, September and October 2009, you may choose to use this service in the first round.

2. When the application period will be?

The application period for the first round is from 26 June to 10 July 2009.

The tentative schedule for the remaining rounds is as follows:

Second Round - Last quarter of 2009 or the first quarter of 2010.

Third Round – Second quarter of 2010

The exact dates are to be confirmed with IMM and will be announced in due course.

Subject to further discussion and agreement with IMM, arrangements for 2010-11 will be announced in early 2010.

3. How does it work?

During the application period specified above, students should submit the relevant documents listed below to the Graduate School Office during office hours. There is no need for them to apply for a certifying letter from us for extension of student visa.

Students will only be required to pay the visa fee of HK$160 to IMM directly when they collect the visa on or after the scheduled collection date mentioned below.

Students are encouraged to make photocopies on both sides of paper so as to save paper and reduce weight.

6. Important reminder from IMM

6.1 The batch submission service is a new initiative with the aim of saving students one trip to IMM. IMM strongly advise students to make use of the service. In particular, Mainland students of CUHK who do not make use of the batch submission service should only approach IMM in person starting from the next working day after CUHK’s delivery of the batch applications to IMM. Those who come before the batch submission date will not normally be able to pick up their extension of stay labels earlier than those students who have made use of the batch submission service.

6.2 Students who have submitted their application by batch but approach IMM before the scheduled collection date are not able to collect their extension of stay labels.

6.3 For those students whose applications cannot be finalised within the target dates mentioned above due to one reason or another, IMM shall individually inform them by phone.

6.4 Due to limited manpower, IMM will not receive applications for extension of stay or issue extension of stay labels to students on Saturdays. Hence, students should not approach IMM on Saturdays unless IMM have specifically scheduled appointment with them.

6.5 Students are requested to complete all required forms and make photocopies of the required pages of 往來港澳通行證 (for Mainland students) or travel documents (for non-Mainland students) before handing in the application to CUHK. Failure to do so will cause delay in the processing.

6.6 Students are required to provide contact telephone number (preferably mobile phone number) in the ID 91 so that IMM can contact them in case of needs.
