Registered full-time students who satisfy the following conditions can apply for grants and loans under the "Tertiary Student Finance Scheme- Publicly-Funded Programmes (TSFS)"¹ administered by the Government Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) of the Hong Kong Government.

The students should
- have the right of abode in Hong Kong; OR
- have had their homes in Hong Kong continuously for three completed years immediately prior to the commencement of their studies (this does not cover students holding student visas to study in Hong Kong)

AND

- be taking up an exclusively UGC-funded or public-funded student place in a recognised programme under TSFS.

Under this scheme, grants are awarded to cover tuition fees and academic expenses while loans are for living expenses. Moreover, Non-means Tested loans are also available to both full-time and part-time students² to cover tuition fees. Recipients of loans have to pay interest and are expected to repay the loans within a specified period after graduation or upon leaving the University. For details, please visit the SFAA website at www.sfaa.gov.hk.

1 Details of eligibility would be confirmed by the Government Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) around April
every year on the SFAA website (www.sfaa.gov.hk). Enquiries can be made directly to the SFAA.

2 Applicants must have right of abode in Hong Kong or have resided or have had their homes in Hong Kong continuously
for three completed years immediately prior to the commencement of their studies (this does not cover students
holding student visas to study in Hong Kong.)

A number of bursaries and loans are available for full-time financially needy students of exclusively UGC-funded or public-funded programmes who are Hong Kong permanent residents. The bursaries and loans are open for application in September. As these are in general supplementary to TSFS provided by the Government, students should first apply for TSFS.

Students not covered by TSFS may approach the Scholarships and Financial Aid Section, Office of Admissions and Financial Aid (OAFA) to discuss their needs and seek advice and assistance as necessary.

Students with emergency needs arising from sudden changes in financial conditions can also apply throughout the year with relevant supporting documents.

Application forms can be downloaded from the OAFA website at www.cuhk.edu.hk/adm/sfas in September.

The University also administers a number of scholarships and prizes, which are awarded on the basis of academic performance. Nominations from Faculties/Departments are normally needed for most of these scholarships/prizes, whilst those for overseas studies are usually open for application. Further information on scholarships and prizes are available from the OAFA website at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/adm/sfas.

Postgraduate Studentships are available in most Graduate Division for full-time students registered for research degree programmes. Students awarded studentships will receive stipends in return for assisting in the teaching and research work of the Graduate Division. The provisional monthly stipend for Postgraduate Studentship is around $12,800-$13,400 for 2009-10.

Financial assistance/scholarships for disabled students are available through various schemes supported by outside organizations. Disabled students may approach OAFA to discuss their needs and seek advice and assistance as necessary.

-Postgraduate Studentship (PGS) is a form of financial assistance provided to full-time postgraduate students registered in research degree programmes. Holders of such studentship are not employees of the University.

- The studentship is available in most graduate divisions. Normally, the award of a PGS will be made known to students when they receive their admission offers. Students need not make a separate application for obtaining the award.

-Students receiving PGS awards are expected to assist in the teaching and research work of the teaching department to which they belong. Their duties will be assigned by the Department Chairman.

-While in receipt of the PGS award, a student must not undertake other engagement or employment, full-time or part-time, unless with permission of the University.
