Undergraduate Programme

Undergraduate Programme

The undergraduate programme is comprehensive, offering more than 80 courses in the areas of political theory, research methodology, comparative government, international relations, political economy, gender politics, public administration, public policy, constitutional law and other political studies of law. We have a regional focus on the Greater China region. Nonetheless, individual courses also cover issues related to countries in other parts of the world. Classes are conducted in lecture, tutorial and seminar formats.

  • GPA Major Programme

    Students are required to complete a minimum of 66 units of courses as follows:

    (i) Require Courses:
    In the First Year of Attendance
    GPA 1020, 1030, 1095, 1110 and any one session of LAW 1010
    15 units
    (ii) 51 units of Elective Courses in GPA or LAW students are required to take at least FOUR 3000 or above level courses during their three years of study or above 51 units
      Total: 66 units

    Requirements for students given permission to take two minor programmes:

    Students are required to complete a minimum of 60 units including required courses listed in (i) above, and 45 units of elective courses listed in (ii).

    Notes:

    1. Students are allowed to take a maximum of two STOT courses within their years of attendance. These two courses may include only one of the following: GPA0210 or 0220.

    2. Students are advised not to take courses coded 3000 or above in their first year of attendance.

  • GPA Minor Programme

    Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 units of GPA (not LAW) courses, including GPA1020 and 1030. Students are advised not to take courses coded 3000 or above in their first year of attendance.

  • Minimum Admission Requirement

    Admission on the Strength of Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination Results:

    Applicants shall

    (1) have obtained in one sitting of the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination grade E or above in at least seven subjects, including two language subjects (Chinese Language, English Language, French or German), and

    (2) have obtained in one sitting of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination grade E or above in:

    (a) Advanced Supplementary Level Chinese Language & Culture; and

    (b) Advanced Supplementary Level Use of English; and

    (c) at least two Advanced Level subjects, or one Advanced Level and two Advanced Supplementary Level subjects; and

    (3) have good grades in Chinese Language and English Language.

    Admission on the Strength of Qualifications other than Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination Results:

    Applicants shall

    (1) have obtained in one sitting of the GCE Advanced Level Examination pass grades in no less than three subjects; or

    (2) have acquired an International Baccalaureate Diploma; or

    (3) possess a qualification obtained outside Hong Kong which qualifies them for university admission in the country/region where such qualification is obtained; or

    (4) have obtained in one sitting of the Hong Kong Higher Level Examination grade E or above in no less than five subjects including Chinese Language & Literature and English Language; or

    (5) have completed at least one year of full-time undergraduate study at a recognized university; or

    (6) be mature persons aged 23 or over on 1st September in the year when admission is sought, provided:

    (a) they are able to show either by publication or by other acceptable evidence that they have achieved sufficient competence in GPA to justify admission; or have shown exceptional ability in appropriate academic or professional fields; and

    (b) they can produce evidence of continuous residence in Hong Kong for at least three years; or

    (7) have other exceptional abilities which merit admission.

    They shall also have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in both the Chinese and English languages.

  • Faculty Language Requirement

    In compliance with the faculty language requirement, all GPA major students are required to take one of the following courses:

    CHI 1213 Chinese for Faculty of Social Science
    CHI 1510 Business Chinese
    CHI 1520 Chinese for Executives
    CHI 1530 Oral Communication Skills
    CHI 1586 Creative Writing in Chinese
    CHI 1812 Professional Chinese (SSC)
    ELT 1108 English Improvement Strategies for Reading & Writing
    ELT 2402 Academic Writing
    ELT 2501 Effective Oral Communication I
    ELT 3103 English Through Current Affairs and Issues
    ELT 3112 Business Communications
    ELT 3402 Academic Writing II
    ELT 3501 Effective Oral Communication II

    Students with the Hong Kong Advanced Supplementary Level Use of English results of E9 or below are required to take ELT1108 to fulfill the Faculty language requirement.
